About this role

Position: Operations Manager
Location: Roslyn, NY

Our client is a leading structural concrete subcontractor serving the New York City metropolitan area. They are responsible for the construction of dozens of mid- and high-rise projects throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island, and the greater New York market.

As our client continues to grow and evolve, they are looking to add an Operations Manager to its leadership team.

Position Overview
The Operations Manager will report directly to the President and serve as their right hand in overseeing the business and corporate operations. This individual will assume increasing responsibility for the day-to-day management of the internal business, allowing the President to dedicate greater time and attention to customers, sales, strategic opportunities, and major company and project decisions. The role will directly lead and hold accountable the heads of Finance & Accounting, Preconstruction, Risk & Insurance, and Human Resources.

Key Responsibilities
Executive Leadership & Corporate Operations
  • Serve as the President's right hand for the day-to-day management of the internal business, progressively taking ownership of corporate operating matters so the President can focus on customers, sales, strategic opportunities, growth, and major company/project decisions.
  • Translate ownership's objectives into clear business priorities, assign accountability, establish deadlines, and follow through with department leaders to ensure commitments are executed.
  • Directly manage and hold accountable the leaders of Finance & Accounting, Preconstruction, Risk & Insurance, and Human Resources, including setting KPIs, reporting requirements, meeting cadences, and performance expectations.
  • Improve communication and coordination across corporate departments, eliminate operational silos, and create clear escalation paths for issues requiring ownership attention.
  • Identify inefficiencies and implement scalable SOPs, workflows, approval processes, internal controls, and management systems that improve organizational performance.
Finance, Controller Accountability & Project-Level Financial Visibility
  • Establish a disciplined working relationship with the Controller built around clear ownership, deadlines, close/reporting calendars, data standards, and accountability for producing the financial information required by ownership.
  • Ensure weekly and monthly financial reporting is complete, accurate, timely, and actionable; challenge gaps or inconsistencies and drive follow-through when information or deliverables are late.
  • Develop a structured executive reporting package that gives ownership visibility into company and project-level financial performance, including cash flow, WIP, job profitability, gross margin, margin gain/fade, billing and collections, accounts receivable, backlog, and forecasted revenue.
  • Establish regular review of estimated-versus-actual costs by project and cost category to identify cost overruns, productivity issues, scope changes, purchasing variances, and other drivers of project performance early.
  • Create consistent visibility into project financial trends and exceptions, ensuring material risks to margin, cash, billing, collections, or forecasted profitability are elevated to ownership with clear recommended actions.
  • Support annual budgeting, forecasting, overhead planning, and long-term financial planning while strengthening internal financial controls and accountability across the organization.
Preconstruction, Sales & Customer Visibility
  • Work with the Head of Preconstruction to establish consistent reporting around the bid pipeline, upcoming opportunities, active bids, awards, losses, backlog, projected workload, and expected revenue.
  • Provide ownership with commercial reporting across pipeline value, bid volume, hit rates, awards, backlog, revenue, and profitability by customer, project type, and other relevant segments.
  • Track conversion from opportunity through bid, award, backlog, and revenue so ownership can better understand where the company is winning, where resources are being invested, and which customers and opportunities warrant greater business-development focus.
  •  This role will not own or manage sales activity; rather, it will create the visibility and reporting that enables the President and leadership team to prioritize customers, business-development efforts, and strategic opportunities.
  • Create accountability around preconstruction timelines, deliverables, estimating accuracy, handoffs, and departmental performance.
Risk, Insurance & Corporate Controls
  • Oversee the company's Risk & Insurance function and ensure appropriate processes and controls are in place to protect the organization.
  • Establish reporting and accountability surrounding insurance, claims, compliance, bonding, contracts, and other areas of corporate risk.
  • Partner with internal teams and external insurance, legal, and risk-management partners as required, and proactively communicate material business risks to executive leadership.
  • Develop standardized processes for tracking, escalating, and resolving risk-related matters across the organization.
Human Resources & Organizational Effectiveness
  • Ensure effective processes are in place for recruiting, onboarding, employee documentation, performance management, compensation, benefits, and employee relations.
  • Partner with leadership to establish clear organizational structures, responsibilities, decision rights, and accountability.
  • Develop scalable HR processes and policies that support continued growth and work with department leaders to identify staffing and resource needs.
Systems, Reporting & Management Infrastructure
  • Evaluate existing technology and systems to determine whether they are being utilized effectively and identify opportunities to improve data quality, workflow efficiency, and reporting.
  • Create centralized dashboards and management reporting that provide executive leadership with a clear, consistent view of company performance across finance, projects, preconstruction, customers, risk, and people.
  • Establish a consistent cadence of executive and departmental meetings with defined agendas, scorecards, action items, owners, and deadlines.

Qualifications
  • 7+ years of progressive operations experience within construction, specialty contracting, general contracting, or a closely related industry.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing multiple corporate/business functions within a construction organization.
  • Strong understanding of construction finance and accounting, including financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, WIP reporting, job profitability, margin gain/fade, billing and collections, backlog, and estimated-versus-actual cost performance.
  • Experience managing and developing senior-level department leaders.
  • Proven ability to establish processes, reporting structures, KPIs, and accountability within a growing organization.
  • Strong understanding of the relationship between preconstruction, finance, risk, HR, and construction operations.
  • Experience developing executive-level financial and operational reporting.
  • Ability to analyze complex business information and translate it into clear recommendations for ownership and executive leadership.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable operating in an entrepreneurial, hands-on construction environment.
  • Experience within the New York construction market is highly preferred.
  • Experience working for a subcontractor or specialty contractor is highly desirable.
